Biography

Ahmed Nagy

(B. 1980) is an artist, founder and art director who lives and works in Cairo. He has a
BFA form Helwan University (2002) and a criticism and painting diploma from the
same university (2004). He is co-founder of “Cairo Documenta” and founder and
director of “Space for Contemporary Art and Cultural Development”.

Nagyʼs practice focuses on building subjective interpretations to link multiple
context to another by analyses various forms of cultural performance such as
consumption, capitalism, political and science for example as a terms with a focus on
the impact of those fields on art and the media. The interchanges between capitalism
and culture are a main theme in his work in various media.
Nagy, who maintains that “The idea/concept of his practice dictates its form,” and call
his artistic practice as a “detection of something is not exist yet”.
Works in video, performance, text, audio, installation and other media.
He co-curated “Pick 5” with “Ania Szremski”, Townhouse Gallery, Cairo 2012.
An initiator and art director of “Parentheses show” a workshop and exhibition, cocurated
with “Mia Jankowicz”, Contemporary Image Collective (CIC), Cairo 2012.

Nagy taken part in numerous local and international events including:
“Experiments in Arab Cinema” at (Simon Fraser University) “SFU”, Vancouver,
Canada, 2013 and (Rochester University) New York, USA, 2014.

a contribution to (IBRAAZ Platform 006), Tate Modern, 2013.

Arts Forum (ACAF) 2012. “One + One + One” is a collaborative platform for Egyptian
and Danish curators, artists, writers and theorists engaged in a critical practice within
the contemporary art scene. “I + I + I” is a platform merging theory and performative
approaches through art seen upon as dialogue, 2012. “Visiting” is an open-ended,
collaborative residency; six artists from the "Rijksakademie" in the Netherlands and
six Cairo based artists participate in a two-week exchange, Townhouse Gallery 2012.
“Interview” a solo show in Saad Zaghlul Museum, Cairo 2010. “Cairo Documenta”
2010 - 2012, “Shopping Malls”, ACAF, Alexandria in 2010. “Why Not? ” Art Palace,
Cairo 2010. “Invisible Presence”, Mashrabia Gallery 2009. He also exhibited his work
at (Darat Al Fenun) “Youth Salon” Jordan 2009, the second “Instant Video Festival” in
France 2009, and won the Salon Reward in the “20th Youth Salon competition” Art
Palaces, Cairo 2009, “Light-side Festival” Netherlands 2008. His work was shown in
the “10th Istanbul Biennale” Istanbul 2007 and the “4th TehranBiennial of Painting”
Iran 2006.

Some of his pieces involved in “Artist Pension Trust / APT Dubai" and the "Modern
Art Museum" in Cairo, as well as by private collectors in Poland, Croatia, Czech
Republic, Nigeria, Denmark, Canada, USA and Switzerland.
